How a machine starts tells a story about its engine health and electronics.
What to Do: Have the dealer deliver a cold machine (not pre-warmed). Turn the key. It should start within 2-3 seconds of cranking with minimal smoke (a small puff is normal in cold weather). Listen for unusual knocks or rattles that disappear as it idles.
The Insight: A hard start or excessive smoke can indicate compression or injector issues. RIPPA’s use of premium engines (Kubota, Yanmar) and rigorous pre-delivery testing is designed to ensure that first impression is a confident, clean turnover.
Operate all functions simultaneously. This is where engineering quality shines or fails.
The Test: Dig a trench. As you lift the boom, curl the bucket, and swing all at once. Does the machine stall, chatter, or hesitate? Or does it move smoothly and powerfully? Try fine control: can you “feather” the controls to grade a smooth surface?
Feeling the Difference: This test reveals the quality of the pump, valves, and system tuning. You’ll feel the advantage of RIPPA’s pilot hydraulic system и load-sensing technology, which provide precise, metered power without lag or jerkiness.
Test the machine’s balance at its limits, as you will in real work.
Safe Tests: Lift the heaviest load you typically handle to maximum height and reach. Does it feel tippy? Swing a loaded bucket quickly from side to side. Does the upper structure feel planted, or does it lurch? Operate on a slight side slope.
Engineering Confidence: Features like RIPPA’s enhanced counterweight and wide-track options exist for this moment. A stable machine lets the operator work faster and with more confidence, directly impacting productivity and safety.
Sit in the cab for 15 minutes. Operate. Imagine doing this for 8 hours.
Evaluate: Is the seat comfortable and adjustable? Are the controls within easy reach without stretching? What is the visibility to the bucket teeth and both tracks? Is there excessive noise or vibration? Are the gauges and displays clear?
The Productivity Link: Fatigue is a profit killer. RIPPA’s ergonomic seats, low-effort pilot controls, and excellent cab sightlines are designed to pass this 8-hour test, keeping your operator fresh and productive.
If you use multiple attachments, test the quick coupler system under real conditions.
The Drill: Bring one of your own attachments. Time how long it takes to disconnect the bucket and connect your attachment, then reverse the process. Is it a one-person, in-cab operation? Does the attachment lock securely without manual pins?
Efficiency Engineered: RIPPA’s hydraulic quick coupler systems are designed for this exact scenario—turning dead time into productive time. A 30-second change versus a 5-minute change saves hours per week.
Drive the machine a couple hundred feet. It shouldn’t feel like a carnival ride.
Assess: Is the ride relatively smooth or brutally jarring? Does it track straight or pull to one side? Can you easily control speed? Test both high and low ranges if equipped.
The Undercarriage Speaks: A rough ride indicates a stiff or poorly balanced undercarriage. Smooth travel, like that designed into RIPPA machines, reduces operator fatigue and minimizes stress on the entire structure during relocation.
Don’t just dig a hole. Recreate a common, challenging task from your own work.
Examples: If you do utility work, dig a deep, vertical-sided trench. If you do landscaping, try precision grading around a tree or lifting and placing patio stones. If you do demolition, mount a breaker and test its impact.
See It in Action: This is where you see if the machine’s specs translate to your reality. A RIPPA dealer will encourage this test because our machines are built for real-world applications, from the offset boom for tight trenches to the four-way circuit for powerful breakers.
Before the demo ends, pop the hood and side panels (with the dealer’s permission).
Look For: Easy access to filters (oil, fuel, air), the dipsticks, the battery, and grease points. Is everything crammed in, or is there thoughtful space for maintenance? Are components clearly labeled?
Designed for the Owner: RIPPA designs with service in mind. What you’ll see are accessible service centers и protected components, reflecting a design philosophy that considers the total cost of ownership, not just assembly speed.
A demo is your due diligence. It separates marketing claims from mechanical reality. Use this checklist to interrogate the machine. The right one will feel like an extension of your will—responsive, stable, and comfortable. Anything less is a compromise you’ll pay for every day you own it.
We’re confident our machines will excel on your checklist. Schedule a no-obligation, extended jobsite demo with your local RIPPA dealer and experience the difference firsthand.
