Western Sydney Wanderers vs Wellington Phoenix A-League Preview and Team News - Wanderers aim to cement top six status

Wanderers host Phoenix on Sunday

Western Sydney Wanderers attempt to extend their unbeaten run against Wellington Phoenix to eight matches when the two sides clash in a rescheduled encounter from Round 7 at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.

Western Sydney have the opportunity to really cement their spot inside the top six when they come up against the struggling Phoenix on Sunday night.

With their original Round 7 contest postponed due to earthquake concerns, the Wanderers and Phoenix have each had a game in hand for the last few months - and now they have the chance to cash in and make some headway up the table.

Currently sitting on 22 points in sixth spot and three points clear of Brisbane Roar, the Wanderers can move six points clear of their finals rivals and to within just one point of the fifth-placed Victory if they can secure their sixth win of the season.

Wellington meanwhile can leapfrog Central Coast Mariners by claiming all three points, and in the process, haul themselves off the bottom of the ladder. A win for Phoenix would also keep them in contention for an unlikely finals spot, but a loss would almost certainly condemn the Kiwi club to another season without finals football.

The Wanderers managed to snap a two-game losing streak where they conceded three goals each in defeats to Victory and Glory as they edged the Mariners 2-1 last week, while Wellington haven’t been able to back up their big win over the second-placed Jets, losing 1-0 to Adelaide and 4-0 to Sydney in their last two outings.

Without a victory over the Wanderers in almost exactly two years (Feb 14 in 2016 was the last time they beat them), Wellington will be hard-pressed to score a much-needed win. With the chance to establish themselves in the top six, surely the Wanderers will rise to the occasion and win at home.

Stats

  • Wanderers are unbeaten against Phoenix in their last seven encounters
  • Wellington’s last win over WSW was in 2016 when Blake Powell scored four goals in a 5-2 triumph
  • Wanderers have scored in every match against Wellington since 2014
