Wanderers face Glory on Sunday

Competition leaders Perth Glory face an improving Western Sydney Wanderers to conclude A-League Round 20 action on Sunday night at Spotless Stadium.

Tony Popovic returns to Western Sydney for the first time since departing the Wanderers as head coach when he brings his table-topping Perth Glory outfit to Spotless Stadium for the last match of Round 20 in the A-League on Sunday night.

Just as he did at the Wanderers, guiding them to that famous Asian Champions League title, Popovic is having immediate success with Perth, helping propel them to the top of the ladder after a tremendous season to date.

Perth have lost just one game across the first 19 rounds and are currently on a 10-game unbeaten run - and if they can avoid defeat against the Wanderers, it will be their longest stretch in history without a loss, while if they win, it will set a new club record for most wins in a single season with 15.

Currently nine points ahead of second-placed Melbourne Victory at the top of the ladder, the minor premiership is Glory’s to lose as we head towards the back-end of the regular season - can the men in purple continue their winning momentum on Sunday night?

They’d normally be heavy favourites, but the Wanderers have taken their game to another level over the last fortnight following a dismal 5-1 loss to the Newcastle Jets.

Indeed, the Wanderers have registered back-to-back wins for the first time this season with triumphs over the Mariners and Adelaide, beating the fourth-placed Reds 3-1 last week. If the Wanderers can cause the upset on Sunday, it will be the first time they would have won three times in a row in almost two years.

Western Sydney will be determined to erase the memories of their last meeting in January, where they led Perth 3-1 with just 11 minutes left, only to concede three goals and lose 4-3. We could be in for another thriller with the Wanderers carrying much better form into this clash, but with the way Perth’s playing at the moment, I can’t back against the competition leaders.

Stats

  • Perth unbeaten in seven of their last eight meetings with Wanderers
  • Glory won 4-3 in their last clash in January
  • Perth aiming for back-to-back wins over Wanderers for the first time since 2015
