Western Sydney Wanderers vs Perth Glory A-League Preview and Team News - Glory attempt to make up ground on top six

Wanderers host Glory on Sunday

Perth Glory look to keep pace with the top six when they travel to Spotless Stadium on Sunday to face the Western Sydney Wanderers.

After scoring a thrilling stoppage time victory over Melbourne City last week, Perth target another three points against a current top six team - this time against the sixth-placed Wanderers.

Glory have been struggling significantly recently, barely winning any matches in 2018, but such is the nature of the A-League, a string of two or three wins on the bounce can propel those teams languishing outside the top six into a finals spot.

A win against the Wanderers won’t quite be enough to see Perth climb into a finals position, but they would come to within just one point of their Western Sydney rivals - something unthinkable even just a fortnight ago.

Perth’s defence has been their achilles heal this season - they’ve conceded the joint most amount of goals alongside Wellington with 42 - six more than the next worse team in that regard, the Wanderers with 36.

Those stats hint that we will be seeing some goals on Sunday - but who will emerge triumphant?

Western Sydney appeared to be turning a corner after putting together some nice wins in January, but they’ve stumbled in recent times, winning just one of their last seven games - and that came against the embattled Mariners.

Coming into this encounter on the back of another heavy derby defeat at the hands of Sydney FC, the Wanderers are far from guaranteed finals football this season - and another defeat to Perth (they lost 3-1 to them just a few weeks ago) would see them in a real dogfight for a top six spot.

There’s a lot on the line for both sides in this fixture. Despite their late win over City, you can’t say Perth are playing particularly good football at the moment, while the Wanderers are in the middle of a rough patch. I think these sides will cancel each other out and we’ll see a share of the spoils on Sunday.

Stats

  • Perth are unbeaten in four of their last five meetings with Western Sydney
  • Glory won their last clash 3-1 on January 28 at nib Stadium
  • Wanderers won their last encounter at Spotless 2-1 on October 8
