Western Sydney Wanderers vs Melbourne Victory A-League Preview and Team News - Victory should be too good for struggling Wanderers

Wanderers face Victory on Saturday

Melbourne Victory attempt to return to the winners circle when they take on Western Sydney Wanderers in A-League Round 11 action on Saturday night.

After two identical 1-1 draws in their last couple of matches, Victory will be confident of claiming all three points against a struggling Wanderers outfit in their first match of 2019.

Victory were on a six-match winning streak until City secured a late point in the derby two weeks ago, while Kevin Muscat’s side were also forced to share the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 result with Wellington in Round 10.

While Victory obviously would have preferred to extend their winning streak, they still showcased some great football and certainly haven’t lost much spark. However, they have lost their marquee star, with Keisuke Honda ruled out for the next month with injury.

Honda’s absence has coincided with Victory’s winning streak being snapped, so just how much influence he has on the team will be seen over the next few games.

Meanwhile, the Wanderers have still just one two games for the season after they were defeated 2-0 by City on New Year’s Day.

It was another wasteful performance from Western Sydney, who now sit in eighth spot - six points adrift of a finals position. It’s definitely not panic stations as points can be racked up swiftly in this league and with more teams making the finals than not, but the Wanderers won’t want to fall too much further behind.

And it doesn’t get any easier as Victory rolls into town on Saturday night. Victory have won their last three meetings and have scored at least three goals in all of those games. Unless the Wanderers improve significantly on Saturday, expect the same sort of scoreline and a Victory win.

Stats

  • Victory won the last three encounters between the sides
  • Victory have scored 10 goals in those three wins
  • Wanderers scored just one goal in that period
