Wanderers face Roar on Saturday

Western Sydney Wanderers target back-to-back wins when they take on Brisbane Roar in A-League Round 4 action in Mudgee on Saturday.

The A-League heads to the NSW central west town of Mudgee on Saturday as the Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Roar square off.

Western Sydney bounced back strongly from a controversial 2-0 derby loss to Sydney FC by crushing Wellington 3-0 away from home last week, with Alexander Baumjohann, Oriel Riera and Jordan O’Doherty getting on the scoresheet in what was an emphatic victory.

With a 1-1 draw away to Perth in the opening round of the season, the Wanderers have compiled a solid start to the new campaign and head into this weekend in fourth spot on the ladder - and who knows what would have happened if not for the controversial VAR blunder against Sydney at the SCG.

While the Wanderers have been fairly impressive, the same can’t be said for Brisbane, who are one of just three teams without a win over the first three rounds.

Brisbane had a tremendous chance to claim six points from six across the first fortnight of the season, taking on last campaign’s two bottom-placed teams - Central Coast and Wellington - at home, however they drew both matches before losing 2-1 away to Perth last week.

Creating opportunities and scoring goals is a problem for Brisbane at the moment, with the team scoring just two all season - and one of them was a penalty. Furthermore, the Roar had just one shot on target for the entire 90 minutes against Perth last week.

Now tasked with facing a confident Wanderers side, Brisbane face an uphill battle to take home their first three points of the season in Mudgee. The head-to-head between these teams is locked at nine wins apiece with four draws, but the Wanderers won their last meeting 3-0 at Spotless. Judging by their respective last-start displays, the Wanderers hold the edge going into this encounter.

Stats

  • Wanderers and Roar have won nine games apiece in their head-to-head (four draws)
  • Wanderers won their last clash 3-0
  • This will be the first A-League game played in Mudgee
