Western Sydney Wanderers vs Brisbane Roar A-League Preview and Team News - Struggling sides clash for valuable three points

Wanderers host Roar on Saturday

Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Roar will both be looking to bounce back from losses last week when they square off in A-League Round 9 action on Saturday at ANZ Stadium.

Currently languishing outside the top six, the Wanderers and Roar are desperate for three points on Saturday as they attempt to keep pace with those teams above them.

It’s been another strange season for the Wanderers so far. They went into last week’s clash with Adelaide unbeaten across the first eight rounds, but a sloppy 2-0 loss meant they sensationally dropped out of the top six.

That is because Western Sydney, for all their hard work, have only won one game all season, with new coach Josep Gombau needing a big turn-around from his side if they are going to transform into premiership contenders.

Meanwhile, the less said about Brisbane’s campaign the better. John Aloisi’s team haven’t been able to get going, registering one win like the Wanderers, but they’ve also lost four other games.

There’s a distinct lack of a go-to man for the Roar this season, with marquee purchase Massimo Maccarone not having a big impact up front, despite scoring a couple of goals.

We’re not used to seeing Brisbane anchored near the bottom of the ladder, but the harsh reality is that they haven’t replaced their missing players with the same quality, so it’s hard to see what’s going to improve for the rest of the season.

Both these sides have combined for just two wins from 15 games this season, so this is obviously a huge game. But can either emerge triumphant? The Wanderers lack that killer punch to finish off games, while Brisbane struggle to get into matches in the first place. Don’t be surprise to see a share of the spoils on Saturday.

Stats

  • Three of their last four meetings have ended in a draw after 90 minutes
  • Wanderers haven’t beaten Roar since their dramatic 5-4 semi-final win in 2016
  • First clash between the sides at ANZ Stadium
