Match Preview

Western Sydney were held to a 1-1 draw by Perth Glory last week but get the chance to enhance their finals claims when hosting struggling Wellington Phoenix on Saturday night.

The Wanderers occupy sixth spot on the ladder but the fight for the finals is congested and Josep Gombau knows his side need to pick up three points against a Phoenix side which is rooted to bottom spot.

It is only a month ago that the Wanderers recorded a 4-0 win over Phoenix at ANZ Stadium and a similar one-sided affair looks likely when the sides meet again on Saturday night.

Wellington Phoenix struggle crossing the Tasman and have failed to score in their last two road trips since pulling off an upset at Newcastle Jets, a victory which remains their only one away from home this season.

It is also four defeats from the last five games for the Phoenix, with their only two goals coming in the solitary win at home to Glory. Do they have the firepower to trouble Western Sydney? Recent form says no.

The Wanderers have dominated this fixture in recent time, going unbeaten in the last six meetings with four wins and two draws, and there seems little reason to expect that run to end.

Stats

  • Western Sydney Wanderers are unbeaten in the last six meetings (four wins, two draws)
  • Wellington Phoenix have failed to score in four of their last five games
  • Phoenix have won just once away from home this season
