Wellington Phoenix target back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they play host to the Western Sydney Wanderers at Westpac Stadium on Saturday in A-League Round 16 action.

After their Round 7 clash was postponed due to poor pitch conditions at Spotless Stadium, the Wanderers and Phoenix will finally do battle for the first time this season on Saturday night.

Both sides endured tough starts to the campaign, but recently there has been cause for more optimism surrounding them.

Western Sydney have of course been on an upward trend for longer - since their 4-0 drubbing against the Jets in fact - beating Melbourne City and Brisbane Roar, along with drawing with Adelaide United on Wednesday night.

Those results have propelled the Wanderers into the top six - and with a game in hand - Josep Gombau’s side are now well-positioned not only for a finals spot, but a push towards the top four.

It seems as if Gombau’s vision for the club is slowly being realised - and we all remember how he started with Adelaide before winning the premiership with them. Could something special be brewing at Wanderland?

Wellington meanwhile have endured yet another turbulent campaign, but Wednesday’s win over Melbourne Victory will give fans hope of more success to come this season.

Mark Milligan’s own goal in the final 10 minutes handed Wellington all three points, with the Kiwi club still eight points adrift of the six - but they do have the game in hand against the Wanderers.

Which makes this showdown crucial. Potentially grab six points from the Wanderers, and all of a sudden Phoenix are back in finals contention. Drop them however, and it’s curtains. It should make for a cracking contest, but I’m not sure I see either team prevailing, so I’m backing a share of the spoils.

Stats

  • Wanderers unbeaten against Phoenix in last six meetings
  • WSW knocked Phoenix out of the FFA Cup in August
  • Wanderers won their last clash at Westpac 2-0
