Wellington face Sydney on Saturday

Sydney FC look to bounce back from disappointing results against the competition’s two bottom sides when they face Wellington Phoenix in Campbelltown on Saturday in A-League Round 20 action.

Wellington were forced to take a home game to Campbelltown Stadium for this A-League Round 20 fixture due to venue constraints in New Zealand this weekend - but they won’t be too fazed from crossing the ditch to meet Sydney if their last meeting in the Harbour City is any indication.

Indeed, Phoenix produced arguably their greatest performance of the season when they beat Sydney 3-1 at Jubilee Oval in the closing stages of 2018, with that victory proving as the catalyst to propelling Wellington well into top six conversations.

Phoenix have since gone on to firmly entrench themselves in a finals position, but they must be weary of a fast-finishing Newcastle Jets outfit, who have closed the gap to six points - and if the Jets win and Phoenix lose, it will be three by the end of the weekend.

That makes this clash a must-win for Wellington if they want to continue having a buffer over the Jets as we head into the final rounds of the regular season.

Sydney meanwhile are aiming to recapture their best form after a couple of poor showings over the last month or so.

Steve Corica’s side have only won one of their last four matches and have failed to beat Brisbane and Central Coast over the last fortnight, losing to the Roar and being forced to come from behind to earn a point against the Mariners last Sunday.

Now 10 points behind competition leaders Perth, a third successive minor premiership appears out of the question now for Sydney, but they can still lock down a top two spot for the finals if they can lift themselves out of their slump.

Apart from Wellington’s 3-1 win in December, Sydney have won four of their last five games against the Kiwi club, scoring at least three goals in three of those victories. Phoenix are flowing along nicely and scraped a point against Victory last week, so they appear to be in better form at the moment. However, in saying that, I feel Sydney are due for a win and they have traditionally had the wood over Phoenix - I’m backing the Sky Blues home on Saturday.

Stats

  • Sydney have won six of the last eight meetings between the teams
  • Sydney won 1-0 in their last clash in January
  • Phoenix prevailed 3-1 in their last encounter in Sydney
