Phoenix host Victory on Wednesday night

Melbourne Victory aim to extend their undefeated streak to five matches when they travel across the ditch to face Wellington Phoenix in A-League Round 15 action on Wednesday night.

While Victory increased their unbeaten stretch to four matches last week, they would have been disappointed not to conjure up a fourth straight win after being held to a 1-1 draw with the struggling Mariners.

Victory would have remained in third and just five points behind Newcastle had they emerged triumphant, but the Mariners were able to come away with a draw as Kevin Muscat’s side slipped to fifth on the ladder.

Besart Berisha put Victory in front shortly after half-time, but Blake Powell scored Central Coast’s first goal in four games as both teams shared the points.

Now tasked with facing another of the A-League’s battlers, Victory can’t afford to let three points slip through their fingers if they want to challenge for a top two finish.

Wellington actually ver nearly pulled off a big upset against Victory’s cross-town rivals City, but the Kiwi club couldn’t hold on as a Ross McCormack double and two brilliant assists from young gun Daniel Arzani gave City a 2-1 win.

The loss leaves Phoenix anchored to the bottom of the ladder with just seven points after one win and four draws from their 13 games.

Currently 10 points adrift of sixth spot, it would take a miracle for Wellington to secure a finals berth this season.

Goals certainly aren’t lacking in recent meetings between these sides, with at least three being scored by one team in their last five match-ups. Wellington have actually won two of their last three - each 3-0 wins - but in current form, Victory should have too much class this time around.

Stats

  • Wellington have won two of their last three meetings
  • 23 goals have been scored in the last five games between the sides
  • Victory came from behind to win 3-2 in their last clash at Westpac Stadium
