Phoenix host Victory on Sunday

Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Victory aim to bounce back from thumping losses last week when they do battle at Westpac Stadium in A-League Round 9 action on Sunday.

Anchored to the bottom of the ladder after eight rounds, Wellington Phoenix play host to eighth-placed Melbourne Victory on Sunday as both sides search for immediate responses to their respective 4-1 defeats last week.

Phoenix, a team who has been dealing with various struggles on and off the field the last two seasons, suffered a crushing loss at the hands of Central Coast last week at home, while Victory conceded four straight goals against Newcastle after initially taking the lead through a Kosta Barbarouses stunner.

While nobody really predicted Wellington to challenge for the title, Victory are already looking like they will have to settle for a spot somewhere in the top six, with rivals Sydney FC already 12 points ahead of them on the ladder.

It’s been a nightmare start to the campaign, with Victory only winning one of their opening eight matches. Kevin Muscat has some work to do if he is to turn things around, but taking on a battling Phoenix side is a tremendous opportunity to return to the winners circle.

Wellington’s new Swiss coach Darije Kalezic is already under pressure as his side looks to haul themselves off the bottom of the ladder - although the Kiwi club do have a game in hand against the Wanderers.

Phoenix can draw confidence from the fact they’ve beaten Victory 3-0 in their last two meetings - although Victory won 6-1 and 4-1 in the two previous encounters. As you can see, goals aren’t hard to come by when these two teams collide, and with Victory equipped with more attacking firepower, this could be exactly what they need to kick-start their season.

  • One team has scored at least three goals in 13 of the last 15 games between the sides
