Wellington host Central Coast on Saturday

Wellington Phoenix aim to extend their unbeaten streak to eight matches when they take on the embattled Central Coast Mariners in A-League Round 13 action on Saturday.

In the middle of a sensational run that has seen them go the last seven games without a loss, Wellington will be supremely confidence of extending that run and bagging another three points against the struggling Mariners on Saturday.

Sitting comfortably in sixth spot, seven points ahead of the Jets and just one point off a top four position, Phoenix claimed a nail-biting win in their last outing mid-week against the Wanderers, scoring two goals in the last 10 minutes to secure a 3-2 victory.

Roy Krishna was once again the hero for Wellington, with the Fijian flyer scoring both goals as the Kiwi club kept the pressure on those above them and created a significant gap between them and the seventh-placed Jets.

One of the form teams in the competition under the tutelage of rookie coach Mark Rudan, Phoenix will be expected to ease past a Mariners side that has created unwanted history this season.

Officially making the worst start to a season of any A-League side, the Mariners have hit an all-time low in going winless over the first 12 rounds to the season, earning just two points and being 17 points adrift of a finals spot.

Life didn’t get any better for Central Coast in their last display, falling to Sydney FC after going 1-0 up, conceding a whopping five second-half goals to lose 5-2.

The Mariners scored a big 4-1 win in their last trip across the ditch in 2017, but that almost certainly won’t happen again. Central Coast are a team without confidence, stability or direction, while Wellington have all of that in abundance right now. Expect another win for the flying Phoenix.

Stats

  • Wellington won 2-0 back in December in Gosford
  • Mariners won 4-1 in their last clash at Westpac in 2017
  • Phoenix haven’t scored in two of their last three meetings with Mariners
