Gary Emmerson 10 Nov 2017

  • But the Phoenix are yet to win this A-League season
  • Perth Glory are embarking on the longest away trip in world football (5255km)

Wellington Phoenix will bid to belatedly get their season up and running when they host Perth Glory in the Long Distance Derby at Westpac Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Phoenix v Glory kicks off at 2.30pm AEST at Westpac Stadium.

Prediction

Match Preview

Wellington Phoenix head into the Long Distance Derby on Sunday still in search of their first win of the season and Darije Kalezic's side will have to bounce back from a laboured effort last week.

Having sacrificed a three-goal lead at home to draw 3-3 with Brisbane Roar the previous week, Phoenix were not at the races on the road last weekend as they went down 3-0 at Newcastle Jets and now sit bottom the A-League ladder.

They return to home comforts at Westpac Stadium on Sunday were they are unbeaten in the last five A-League games, but are without Michael McGlinchey and Andrew Durante with both on international duty with the All Whites for their World Cup play-off.

The positive for Wellington is that they face a Perth Glory side which doesn't travel well. They have just two wins in the last 17 away games and Kenny Lowe's side can't be backed with much confidence.

Despite Glory recording a 1-0 win over Adelaide United last week and having collected a point at the impressive Jets already this season, this game looks one to sit on the fence with.

The two sides played out an entertaining 3-3 draw last time they meet in Wellington, but expect this one to be tighter.

Stats

  • Wellington Phoenix are unbeaten in their last five home games
  • But the Phoenix are yet to win this A-League season
  • Perth Glory are embarking on the longest away trip in world football (5255km)
