Wellington Phoenix v Melbourne City A-League Match Preview and Predictions - Can Nix avoid wooden spoon?

Gary Emmerson 13 Apr 2018
  • Melbourne City have won the last six meetings between the sides
  • City have won their last three games without conceding
  • Wellington Phoenix have won one of their last 10 games

Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne City have plenty to play for ahead of their final game of the regular A-League season at Westpac Stadium on Saturday night.

Phoenix v City kicks off at 5.35pm AEST. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

Prediction

Match Preview

Melbourne City will know before kick off whether they need to win the game to return to the third spot in which they headed into Round 27 with rivals Melbourne Victory having clashed with Sydney FC on Friday night.

If Victory collected all three points in the Big Blue, City will need to beat Wellington Phoenix to secure third spot and guarantee avoiding premiers Sydney FC until the Grand Final should either make it to the big dance.

If Sydney FC won or the game ended in a draw, City will know that third spot is their's and that will leave Phoenix with the only one of the two sides with something at stake from this game.

A win - just their fifth of the season - is needed to move Phoenix off bottom spot. Anything less and they will be consigned to the wooden spoon.

It is hard to think Wellington can find the form to end a dreadful season on a high with just one win and four points collected from the last 10 games.

They face a Melbourne City side which is in flying form and has won their last three games without conceding. The visitors have also won the last six meetings between the sides and sohuld extend that run on Saturday.

Stats

  • Melbourne City have won the last six meetings between the sides
