Sydney FC vs Wellington Phoenix A-League Preview and Team News - Wellington's poor away record set to continue

Sydney face Wellington on Saturday

Sydney FC target their first win at Jubilee Oval when they square off against Wellington Phoenix in A-League Round 7 action on Saturday.

This game takes on an added element, with Wellington coach Mark Rudan set to face his former club for the first time on Saturday.

Rudan was one of the inaugural inductees into the Sydney FC Hall of Fame in 2015 after playing 61 games for the club, including captaining the team and featuring in their premiership-winning campaign of 2015.

However, after four years of overseeing NPL side Sydney United, Rudan has made the move up to A-League coach - and now he will plot the demise of his former club.

Wellington were unlucky not to claim all three points against competition leaders Perth in last week’s Distance Derby, with a controversial late red card contributing to Glory scoring a late equaliser as the two teams drew 1-1.

Although ninth on the ladder, Phoenix are just one spot off the top six and appear a much better side than recent seasons.

Sydney meanwhile haven’t been that impressive over the last few weeks and will be determined for a polished performance and three points on Saturday.

The Sky Blues were held to a 1-1 draw with Newcastle before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Victory in the Big Blue just after the international break. And although Sydney prevailed 2-1 over the Mariners last week, they were far from dominant, with an Adam Le Fondre penalty and Brandon O’Neill rocket from 25 metres handing them the win.

Sydney haven’t lost in their last six home meetings with Wellington, and you’d expect that trend to continue. Wellington will fight hard, but their away form is poor and they likely won’t have enough firepower to match it with Steve Corica’s troops.

Stats

  • Sydney undefeated in last six home games against Wellington
  • Phoenix picked up just one point in last eight away games in the A-League
  • Wellington’s last away win over Sydney came in March 2016
