Sydney FC look to increase their lead at the top of the A-League ladder when they play host to Wellington Phoenix at Allianz Stadium in Round 19 action on Friday night.

Dominant reigning premiers Sydney target their third straight win over Wellington when the two sides square off to launch A-League Round 19 action on Friday night.

Already boasting a nine-point lead over second-placed Newcastle heading into this round, Sydney are looking unstoppable in their quest for back-to-back titles at the moment.

In fact, they only thing that might hinder them ever so slightly is the upcoming Asian Champions League, with coach Graham Arnold determined to bring in some reinforcement and add more depth to his squad.

But it’s no worries in the A-League right now, with the Sky Blues bouncing back from their 1-1 draw against the Mariners by coming from behind to topple Melbourne Victory, firing in three second-half goals to emerge triumphant by a 3-1 scoreline.

Brazilian star Bobo added two more goals to his stunning season to take his overall tally to 18 - and the in-form striker will fancy his chances of adding more to his list on Friday night.

Meanwhile, after an encouraging last few weeks, Wellington were brought back down to earth last week as they went down 1-0 at home to Adelaide.

Wellington could have come to within just two points of a finals spot had they bagged all three points, but instead their momentum was squashed as they remain anchored to the foot of the ladder.

Phoenix had come into that clash on the back of two wins from their last three games, including a brilliant 3-2 effort over the high-flying Jets.

But another tough test looms on Friday night, and there’s no way Wellington’s defence will be able to withstand Sydney’s fearsome attack at home. Phoenix will have to fire in multiple goals themselves to stand any chance of coming away with a result, but the best bet here is to back Sydney winning comfortably.

Stats

  • Sydney have won both their previous encounters this season
  • The Sky Blues have scored seven goals combined in those two victories
  • Wellington haven’t kept a clean sheet against Sydney since 2015
