Sydney face Brisbane on Saturday

Sydney FC look to reclaim top spot on the A-League ladder when they play host to Brisbane Roar on Saturday night at Allianz Stadium in Round 8 action.

With Newcastle Jets thumping Melbourne Victory 4-1 on Thursday night, Sydney FC will have to win their third game in seven days at Allianz Stadium in order to return to the top of the A-League table on Saturday night.

Sydney were crowned FFA Cup champions for the first time on Tuesday night, edging Adelaide United in extra-time and backing up a 2-1 triumph over the Jets a few days earlier in a top-of-the-table showdown played in atrocious conditions.

Graham Arnold’s side have a fantastic record at Allianz and have gone unbeaten at the venue for the last 20 fixtures - can the Sky Blues keep that trend going on Saturday night?

Speaking of Arnold, it remains to be seen if he will oversee Sydney’s entire campaign after Ange Postecoglou stepped down as Socceroos coach mid-week. That could be something that may possibly hinder Sydney’s season as the campaign draws on.

Nevertheless, they will start as big favourites to knock off a Brisbane side who are looking to generate some momentum after picking up their first win of the season last week.

Things finally clicked for the Roar as they toppled Melbourne City 3-1 at home, but they face a massive test against the reigning champions and recently-crowned FFA Cup winners.

Brisbane do have a great recent record against Sydney, with the Sky Blues winning just one of their six meetings since 2015. However the Roar are winless in their last three against Sydney, and with the defending premiers riding a big wave of momentum, I can’t see Brisbane doing much damage on Saturday night.

Stats

  • Brisbane are unbeaten in five of their last six games against Sydney
  • Sydney won 2-0 in their last clash at Allianz
  • Sydney are unbeaten in their last 20 games at home
