Sydney face Adelaide on Sunday

Sydney FC go in search of revenge over Adelaide United when the two teams clash in A-League Round 13 action on Sunday night.

After going down 2-1 to Adelaide in the FFA Cup final at the beginning of the season, Sydney will be out to turn the tables as the sides square off in the A-League on Sunday night.

Craig Goodwin was the hero for Adelaide on that historic night at Coopers as the former Socceroos winger netted a stunning brace to propel his side to the silverware.

Goodwin, one of the best players in the competition this season, was also on the scoresheet as Adelaide produced one of their best performances in months to dismantle Melbourne Victory 2-0 mid-week.

Now unbeaten in their last four matches and opening up a seven-point lead over sixth-placed Newcastle, can the Reds take the scalp of Sydney for the second time this campaign?

Sydney will be determined to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to competition leaders Perth Glory in their last outing, with Steve Corica’s men no match for the men in purple.

The Sky Blues saw their four-match winning streak come to an abrupt halt, and as a result, they are six points behind Perth at the top of the ladder.

While Sydney have had no issues finding the back of the net in recent weeks, they do have a bit of a problem at the back, with the team failing to keep a clean sheet in over two months.

However, Sydney do have history on their side against Adelaide - they haven’t lost to them in the A-League since 2016, while the Reds haven’t scored in their last three visits to Sydney. I’m still not convinced Adelaide are a top team - certainly not away from home - so I’ll back the Sky Blues to return to the winners circle on Sunday.

Stats

  • Sydney haven’t lost to Adelaide in the A-League in three years
  • Adelaide haven’t scored in their last three away games vs Sydney
  • Adelaide beat Sydney 2-1 to win the FFA Cup earlier this season
