Sydney FC v Shanghai Shenhua AFC Champions League Match Preview and Predictions - Can the Sky Blues qualify?

Gary Emmerson 16 Apr 2018
  • Sydney FC must win and hope Suwon Bluewings don't win to qualify
  • Shanghai Shenhua have already been eliminated
  • The two sides played out a 2-2 draw in Matchday One

Sydney FC bid to pull off an unlikely comeback and secure the win needed to qualify for the AFC Champions League knockout stages when they host Shanghai Shenhua on Tuesday.

Sydney FC v Shanghai Shenhua kicks off at 8.00pm AEST at Allianz Stadium.

Prediction

Match Preview

Sydney FC were staring at an early exit from the AFC Champions League two weeks ago but a 4-1 win at Suwon Bluewings means they go into the Matchday Six game against Shanghai Shenhua with the possibility of making the round of 16.

Graham Arnold's A-League premiers sit in third spot in Group H with five points from five games, but significantly they trail second placed Suwon by two points and simply must beat Shangai Shenhua to stand a chance of qualifying.

Sydney must do the business at home and hope Suwon do not win at top of the group Kashima Antlers. If the Bluewings draw, Sydney would progress courtesy of a better head-to-head record having lost 2-0 at home but won 4-1 in South Korea.

For Shanghai Shenhua, the competition if already over with just four points collected - all from draws - and having recorded a loss and a draw with Suwon, whose points total they can only match at best.

These two sides played out a 2-2 draw in China on Matchday One, and there has been little to suggest there will be much between them again on what we have seen so far in Group H.

Sydney have lost both home games 2-0, but with no game at the weekend as the A-League finals get underway, the domestic champions can turn all their focus on qualifying. My only fear is that it won't be enough and this will end in a share of the points again.

Stats

  • Sydney FC must win and hope Suwon Bluewings don't win to qualify
  • Shanghai Shenhua have already been eliminated
  • The two sides played out a 2-2 draw in Matchday One
