Gary Emmerson 11 Apr 2018
  • Sydney FC are unbeaten in the last seven Big Blue clashes
  • Melbourne Victory lost both meetings at home earlier in the season
  • Victory must win to guarantee avoiding a semi-final with Sydney

Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory get the closing round of the A-League season underway and the Big Blue clash at Allianz Stadium could be a curtain raiser to the finals.

Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory kicks off at 7.50pm AEST. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

Match Preview

There's never any love lost when the Big Blue rivals collide and that shouldn't be any different on Friday night for the latest installment at Allianz Stadium.

Sydney FC have already wrapped up a history-making second successive Premiers Plate and are eyeing another Grand Final victory 12 months after beating Melbourne Victory on penalties.

Victory still have something to play for with a win over the Sky Blues needed to jump above cross-town rivals Melbourne City into third place temporarily at least. If Kevin Muscat's Victory side are to guarantee avoiding Sydney at the semi-final stage of the finals they must secure third spot.

Sydney won both meetings this season in Melbourne, a 1-0 win on the opening weekend and a 3-1 success in January to take their unbeaten run in the Big Blue to seven games.

Melbourne Victory have had a problem breaking down Sydney is recent times and that does not bode well for a side who must win if they are to have a chance of finishing third on the ladder.

The Sky Blues have won their last four games including in the AFC Champions League and on the evidence of last week's victory over Adelaide United, they should be too good for their old foes.

Stats

  • Sydney FC are unbeaten in the last seven Big Blue clashes
  • Melbourne Victory lost both meetings at home earlier in the season
  • Victory must win to guarantee avoiding a semi-final with Sydney
