Match Preview

What an important match Brazil v Serbia has turned out to be. At the start of the tournament, many thought this final group match would be a mere tune-up for Brazil. That is not the case, as a loss would see Brazil sensationally knocked out in the group stage.

A 1-1 draw against Switzerland caused widespread national criticism in Brazil. I can only imagine what was being said as Brazil was tied up at 0-0 after 90 minutes against the lowly Costa Rica side. Two penalty time goals saved Brazil and that has given them a lifeline to progress through into the knockout stage with a victory over Serbia.

Serbia scored their first World Cup victory as an independent nation with a nail-biting 1-0 victory over Costa Rica. This was thanks, in large part to Aleksandar Kolarov who scored a stunning goal in the 56th minute.

This victory was followed by a 2-1 loss against Switzerland on Sunday. A header in the 5th minute from Aleksandar Mitrovic gave Serbia the perfect start, however, two second-half goals from the Swiss saw them move into the box seat to qualify for the round of 16.

Brazil failing to make it through the group stage. This was something that was unthinkable at the start of the tournament but could become a reality if Serbia was to cause the upset on Wednesday night. Even a victory from Brazil may not see them finish on top of the standings, with Switzerland playing lowly Costa Rica.

With a match of such importance, it seems almost expected that Brazil walk away with the victory and move onto the knockout stage. I cannot fathom any other result.

Stats

  • Brazil hasn’t been eliminated in the group stage since 1966.
  • Brazil has a +11 goal differential over their last six games.
  • Serbia won their first game in World Cup history last week against Costa Rica.
