Senegal v Colombia World Cup Preview and Predictions - Who will advance from this critical Group H clash?

Rippa Staff 27 Jun 2018

Senegal may rue letting a lead slip twice against Japan, as they fight for their tournament lives against the equally as desperate Colombia on Thursday, June 28 (Friday AEST) at Samara Arena.

Senegal v Colombia kicks off at 12.00am AEST on Friday. The game will be broadcast on SBS in Australia.

Match Preview

Senegal let a golden opportunity to punch their ticket to the knockout stage slip when up 1-0 and 2-1 against Japan. A victory against Japan would’ve seen Senegal qualify for the knockout stage, however, Japan levelled the scores at 2-2 in the 78th minute.

Senegal can still make the round of 16 for the first time since 2002 with a win or draw against Colombia. They can also lose but would rely on Poland defeat Japan which seems unlikely.

Colombia was down to 10 men for over 90 minutes of the match against Japan and still very nearly came away with a draw. The Colombians showed what they can do with a full 11-man squad, pulling away with an easy 3-0 victory against Poland.

Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina isn’t getting caught up in the 3-0 victory. We are not thinking about anything apart from the next game,” Ospina said. "We are still in third place in the group, and if we don't win then we are going home.

"So our concentration and our 100 percent focus is on Senegal, not who we could play in the next round. Winning against Poland has put us back in the World Cup. We must not throw the good work away now."

This is an intriguing matchup from an intriguing group. I believe Colombia are deserved favourites, however, I do think the draw is over the odds at $3.40 and should be closer to $2.80-$3.00.

Stats

  • Senegal has kept a clean sheet in three of their last six matches.
  • Senegal has scored seven goals in their last four matches
  • Colombia has scored 11 goals in their last six matches.
