Reigning A-League champions Melbourne Victory square off against NSW NPL outfit the Rockdale City Suns in FFA Cup Round of 16 action on Tuesday night.

It will be the second trip north into Sydney for Victory after Kevin Muscat’s troops accounted for Balmain Tigers FC 6-0 in the Round of 32 earlier this month, while Rockdale booked their date with the A-League juggernauts by upstaging Perth SC 3-1.

The game will be played at Jubilee Oval in Kogarah with kick off scheduled for 7.30pm AEST. It will be broadcast on Fox Sports in Australia, while you can also stream the game live online.

Match Preview

Rockdale City Suns and Melbourne Victory collide in a mammoth David v Goliath style of encounter during the second edition of the Westfield FFA Cup, with a spot in the quarter-finals up for grabs.

What an opportunity it is for the Suns players. Many will never again get the chance to line up against the best football side in the country, and you can bet your bottom dollar Paul Reid’s charges will leave everything out on the pitch in their quest to be competitive.

Coming off a sixth place finish in the NSW NPL, the Suns will have to produce a monumental effort to keep pace with a slick Victory side who have been scoring goals for fun in the pre-season.

They have however received some words of encouragement from NSW Premier Mike Baird ahead of the clash.

"Tuesday’s match against the defending A League champions, Melbourne Victory, will be an historic occasion for the club, players and the Suns’ passionate supporters,” he said. “Taking on one of the country’s top teams on your own turf, and in front of a national TV audience, is a rare opportunity so leave everything you have out on the park.”

Victory meanwhile will be hugely confident of extending their FFA Cup campaign into the quarter-finals. They’ve enjoyed a successful preseason, the last of which a comfortable 4-0 thrashing of Port Melbourne Sharks last Tuesday night.

With the likes of Fahid Ben Khalfallah, Archie Thompson, Gui Finkler and Besart Berisha taking on the Suns defenders down the wings and through the middle, you’d fancy Victory to continue with their free-flowing goalscoring in this clash.

Muscat said his side can still improve ahead of the upcoming 2015/16 A-League season.

"We're going to have a few players unavailable through international duty, so we looked at a few different things [against Port Melbourne] and I was pretty pleased,” he said. “We're still a fair way off from where we want to be, it was a good step in the right direction for us.”

Rochdale haven’t played since a 4-0 loss to Bonnyrigg White Eagles in the final round of the NSW NPL a fortnight ago, while Victory registered the same scoreline in their friendly win last week. The Suns will be determined and put up a huge fight, but if they concede early, the floodgates are likely to open. Victory will win easily, but it will be an intriguing contest nonetheless.
