Portugal v Spain World Cup Match Preview and Predictions - Two World Cup heavyweights collide

Rippa Staff 12 Jun 2018
  • Spain and Portugal do battle
  • Spain can bounce back from their horror 2014 World Cup
  • Will Cristiano Ronaldo carry Portugal?

The two heavyweights of Group B collide on only the second day of the tournament as Spain take on Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal at Fisht Olympic Stadium on Friday (Saturday AEST).

Spain vs Portugal kicks off at 04.00am AEST on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on SBS and Optus Sport in Australia.

Prediction

Match Preview

Not to disrespect Morocco or Iran, however, it seems that the result of Group B will be decided on the second day of the tournament, with Spain taking on Portugal.

Spain has been in red-hot form and find themselves one of the favourites for the tournament. The Spaniards will be looking to make amends for their efforts in 2014.

Spain are 2-0-2 over their four International matches in 2018. They have a 1-0 victory over Tunisia and a 6-1 rout of Argentina. They have also notched two 1-1 draws against Switzerland and Germany.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal have drawn the short straw, not only being drawn with Spain, but playing them straight up.

Portugal's recent form has been slightly shaky. They suffered a 0-3 loss against the Netherlands and a 2-2 draw against Tunisia earlier in the year. Things have been better since then, with a 0-0 draw vs Belgium and a 3-0 victory over Algeria.

After only qualifying for the World Cup twice before 2002, Portugal will be competing in their fifth consecutive World Cup here in Russia. The highlight of this current streak was a fourth-place finish in Germany back in 2006.

Spain followed up their incredible 2010 World Cup victory with a horror showing in 2014. The Spaniards didn’t make it out of the Group Stage and finished 23rd, their lowest finish in World Cup history.

I’m confident that Spain can kick off their 2018 World Cup campaign with a victory over Portugal and all but solidify their spot in the knockout stage.

Stats

  • Spain had a +32 goal differential over their 10 World Cup qualifying matches, booting home 36 goals while allowing only four.
  • Portugal were also undefeated over their World Cup qualifiers. They allowed only one goal over their four matches.
