Perth Glory look to extend their lead at the top of the table when they square off against the struggling Western Sydney Wanderers to conclude A-League Round 13 action.

With just two wins from 12 matches this season and 10 points adrift of a finals spot, the Wanderers could be in for a long night yet again on Sunday against competition leaders Perth.

The Wanderers are now winless in their last five matches following a 3-2 loss to Wellington in their last outing - a game in which they should have at least earned a point, but they leaked two goals in the dying stages courtesy of some poor defence.

Markus Babbel’s side are now entering desperation stakes as they try to chase down a spot in the finals, but they cannot afford to drop further off the pace.

Perth have no such concerns, with former Wanderers boss Tony Popovic enjoying a dream start to life as Glory manager, flying high with a six point gap at the top of the ladder following their 3-1 win over rivals Sydney FC mid-week.

Glory have still lost just the one game all season, winning nine of their 12 games and transforming into genuine premiership contenders as they attempt to win their first ever A-League premiership.

Joel Chianese was the unlikely hero against Sydney as he netted a brace before former Wanderers striker Brendon Santalab gave Perth a dominant lead at half-time - and the Sky Blues ultimately couldn’t recover.

Four of the last seven matches between these teams have been draws, including a 1-1 result back in Round 1. However, Glory and the Wanderers have shot in opposite directions since then, and given the Wanderers’ poor away record and Perth’s dominance, it’s hard to see the home side losing this one.

Stats

  • Four of their last seven encounters have ended in a draw
  • Wanderers have only won one of their last eight away games
  • The two teams played out a 1-1 draw back in Round 1
