Competition leaders Perth Glory square off against Wellington Phoenix in a highly-anticipated ‘Distance Derby’ in A-League Round 17 action on Saturday night.

Perth attempt to extend their lead at the top of the table when they come up against Wellington in the second Distance Derby of the season at HBF Park on Saturday night.

It’s tough to think of a time when both these teams were playing better football at the same time, and as such, this fixture is arguably the match to watch this weekend.

Four points clear at the top of the table with just one loss all season, Glory have been the undisputed stand-out team this campaign, but can they keep it up all the way to a maiden A-League premiership?

After a couple of 0-0 stalemates, Perth returned to the winners circle last week as they comfortably accounted for the Jets by a 2-0 scoreline.

With winger Chris Ikonomidis returning from Socceroos duties, Glory are only going to get more dangerous heading into this clash.

However, Wellington won’t be backing down, with the Kiwi club enjoying an outstanding run of form on the road, going unbeaten in their last five away games.

Eleven points clear of the seventh-placed Jets, Wellington hold their finals destiny in their own hands, and it would take quite a dramatic collapse from here on in for them to miss out.

Roy Krishna, Sarpreet Singh and David Williams have transformed into one of the most attacking combinations in the competition - and it was Williams who was on the scoresheet once again last week as he fired home to hand Wellington a 1-0 win over City.

However, Phoenix will need to snap a three-match losing run at HBF Park in order to continue their winning momentum on Saturday night. I think they are a decent chance for the three points. Perth’s only win over the last three rounds was against a lacklustre Newcastle last week, while Wellington are improving each week. It might be a bit much to pick them for the upset, but a share of the spoils isn’t out of the question.

Stats

  • Wellington unbeaten in their last five away games
  • Glory have only won one of their last five meetings with Phoenix
  • The two teams drew 1-1 in December in their last clash
