Perth host Sydney on Wednesday night

A top-of-the-table clash awaits on Wednesday night at nib Stadium as competition leaders Perth Glory square off against last season’s minor premiers Sydney FC in A-League Round 12 action.

Perth have only lost one game all season and that came against their opponents on Wednesday night - can the Sky Blues inflict another defeat on the competition leaders, or will Tony Popovic’s team extend their lead over Sydney to six points?

Both teams come into this showdown on the back of big come-from-behind victories in Round 11 on the weekend, with Sydney taking out the bottom-placed Mariners 5-2 and Perth recovering from a 2-0 deficit to score three goals in the last 10 minutes to eclipse Brisbane Roar 4-2.

It was the second straight week in which Perth have fired home four goals against teams outside the top six after they dismantled the Mariners themselves 4-1 on New Year’s Eve.

Glory aren’t showing any signs of slowing down after their brilliant start to the season, but this is arguably their biggest challenge of the campaign as they come up against the only side to have taken three points off them so far.

Sydney were always going to find it tough to replicate their dominant regular seasons from the last two years, but under the tutelage of Steve Corica, they have done a solid job of remaining near the top of the table - and depending on how Victory fare against Adelaide earlier on Wednesday, they could finish the round on top of the ladder if they prevail.

The Sky Blues were under initial threat of slumping to a massive upset as they trailed Central Coast at half-time on Friday night, but they slotted home five second-half goals to run out comfortable winners.

What’s more is Sydney’s dominant record against Perth - they’ve won their last 10 encounters dating back to 2016, including a 2-1 win earlier this season. Sydney have also scored 31 goals in that time period. This is obviously a much improved Perth outfit, but the Sky Blues have the wood over Perth and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them prevail again on Wednesday night.

Match Odds

Perth Glory - $2.60
Sydney FC - $2.60
Draw - $3.20
