Jets host Phoenix on Thursday night

Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix clash in a potential season-defining showdown to launch A-League Round 18 action in the Hunter on Thursday night.

With the Jets set to play a AFC Champions League qualifier next Tuesday, their A-League Round 18 match against Wellington has been pushed ahead to Thursday - and it promises to be a cracking contest to kick off the weekend’s action.

With 10 rounds still to play of the regular season, it might be premature to call this a season-defining fixture, but when all is said and done, Newcastle and Wellington might look back at this moment as the game that shaped the final third of their respective seasons.

The equation is simple. If Newcastle prevail, they will move to within five points of Wellington and pile the pressure on the Kiwi club as they chase a rare finals spot. However, if Phoenix win, they will establish an 11-point lead over the Jets, all but ending their finals hopes.

It makes this a must-win game for last season’s grand finalists, who have struggled for the bulk of the season but might have turned a corner last week.

Indeed, Newcastle produced their most polished performance of the season to demolish the Wanderers by a 5-1 scoreline.

By contrast, Wellington came crashing back down to earth with a humbling 3-0 defeat away to competition leaders Perth.

So much is at stake, with both teams knowing the significance of this clash. They’ve shared the spoils in their last four meetings, winning two apiece, with Wellington winning 2-1 back in Round 1. It’s truly now or never time for the Jets, and on the back of last week’s display, I think they can emerge victorious and make a late charge for the finals.

Stats

  • The two teams have split two wins apiece in their last four meetings
  • Wellington prevailed 2-1 back in Round 1
  • Phoenix won their last clash at McDonald Jones 3-2 in January 2018
