Jets host Sydney on Saturday

Newcastle Jets are staring down the barrel of a four-game winless run to start the season when they face competition leaders Sydney FC on Saturday night in Round 4 of the A-League.

Last season’s grand finalists Newcastle have yet to win a game over the first three rounds of the new A-League season - and it doesn’t get any easier on Saturday night as they confront the in-form Sydney FC.

The Jets have lost two of their first three games of the season to Phoenix and Victory, while they were also held to a 1-1 draw against Adelaide in Round 2. Finding the back of the next has become a problem for Newcastle, with Roy O’Donovan suspended and Joey Champness injured, while the club is still struggling to fill the void left from the departure of star winger Andrew Nabbout.

Brazilian striker Jair hasn’t found his groove yet, while defender-turned-attacker Jason Hoffman can’t be expected to consistently score like he did last season. Ronny Vargas got on the scoresheet against Adelaide and was unlucky to hit the bar against Victory, while Dimi Petratos remains dangerous, but things just aren’t clicking in the Hunter at the moment.

It’s exactly the opposite in the Harbour City, with marquee striker Adam Le Fondre scoring two more goals in Sydney’s big 3-0 win away to Melbourne City last week.

It was the perfect response to their FFA Cup defeat to Adelaide earlier in the week, with Sydney now in a familiar position on top of the ladder heading into Round 4. The Sky Blues are blessed with class all over the field, led by Le Fondre and Milos Ninkovic, while Rhyan Grant has been brilliant since returning from an ACL injury.

Newcastle won their last meeting in 2017/18, but they haven’t beaten Sydney in back-to-back games since 2012. The Jets are in a bit of a rut and they are in for another rough day at the office as Sydney come into town. Expect the Sky Blues to emerge triumphant.

Stats

  • Jets have only beaten Sydney in back-to-back games once in their history (2012)
  • Sydney have kept a clean sheet in five of their last seven games at McDonald Jones Stadium
  • The last time Sydney failed to score in Newcastle was 2008
