Newcastle Jets attempt to register their first win over Sydney FC since 2012 when the two sides square off in a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday in A-League Round 22 action.

Winless in their last 15 encounters against reigning premiers and current runaway competition leaders Sydney FC dating all the way back to 2012, is Saturday finally the day Newcastle Jets claim an elusive win over their Sky Blue rivals?

As far as bogey sides in the A-League go, it doesn’t get any more daunting than this for the high-flying Jets, who have produced an incredible season to date after picking up the wooden spoon in two of the last three years.

With finals football already ensured for the first time in seven seasons, the Jets will now switch their attention to finishing as close to Sydney as possible - and potentially securing Asian Champions League football for next season.

It’s an intimidating record, but the Jets will be buoyed by their last performance against Sydney on January 3 last month, with the two teams arguably producing the game of the season as they combined for a pulsating 2-2 draw - with Newcastle snapping a nine-match losing run against Graham Arnold’s side as a result.

While Sydney have been completely dominant and are unbeaten in their last 15 A-League games since their shock loss to the Mariners, Newcastle have done something that not even the premiers have this season - and that’s score in every single game.

There’s no doubt that Sydney head into this game as the big favourites - especially after another emphatic derby triumph against the Wanderers on Sunday - but if the Jets can hold up defensively and be the first on the scoresheet, a bumper crowd at McDonald Jones Stadium could see them over the line

You get the feeling something special is brewing in the Hunter this season. It might not all come at once on Saturday night, but I do like the counter-attacking Jets as the team to derail the Sky Blues at some stage. I’m tempted to back the upset, but I think I’ll play it slightly safer and tip another thrilling draw.

Stats

  • Sydney are unbeaten against Newcastle since 2012
  • That’s 15 matches in total!
  • Sydney are also unbeaten in their last 15 A-League games
