Newcastle Jets vs Perth Glory A-League Preview and Team News - Jets look for first home win over Glory since 2011

Andrew Hendrie 12 Oct 2017
  • Newcastle Jets face Perth Glory on Sunday
  • Glory unbeaten at McDonalds Jones Stadium since 2011

Newcastle Jets will be aiming to repeat their impressive performance from last week when they play host to Perth Glory at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

While there was some cause for optimism for Newcastle fans before the launch of the 2017/18 A-League season - namely an accomplished head coach in Ernie Merrick and the signing of a genuine marquee in Ronald Vargas - not even the most die-hard of Jets supporters would have predicted the explosive display from the club last Saturday afternoon in Gosford.

Newcastle played one of their best matches in years as the demolished bitter rivals the Central Coast Mariners 5-1 in the F3 derby, with ex-Mariner Roy O’Donovan bagging himself an outstanding first-half hat-trick, while rising star Joe Champness and new signing Dimi Petratos opened their accounts for the Jets in the second half to complete a memorable victory.

With Merrick - a two-time A-League winning coach - calling the shots, Newcastle look a far more settled and balanced side, while Vargas showcased glimpses of his immense talent - including a cheeky nutmeg - and the Venezuelan should be better for the run going forward.

However, it’s still only been one game, and the Jets will need to back up that performance with another solid display on Sunday if they want this wave of momentum to continue.

It won’t be easy either, with one-time bogey side Perth Glory looking to claim their first win of the season after they were pipped 2-1 by the Western Sydney Wanderers last week.

Despite the loss, Glory will be extremely confident of emerging triumphant - they’ve won 13 of their last 16 games against the Jets and are undefeated in their last eight visits to McDonald Jones Stadium, last losing at the venue all the way back in 2011.

Newcastle did however snap their hoodoo last year against Perth with one win and a draw - and Glory will need to tighten up their suspect defence if they are to take anything from this showdown, especially with the Jets in this sort of form.

All in all it’s a nice test for the Jets - they come up against a tough club, but a team who also leaked the joint-most goals last season, with Perth barely signing anyone new in defence for this season. If Newcastle can replicate their showing from last week, I think they walk away with all three points.

Stats

  • Glory have won 13 of the last 16 games between the sides
  • Perth are unbeaten at McDonald Jones Stadium since 2011
  • Roy O’Donovan has scored five goals in his last five games against Perth
