The second F3 derby of the season takes place at McDonald Jones Stadium on Tuesday night as the high-flying Newcastle Jets play host to the Central Coast Mariners.

Newcastle aim to strengthen their stranglehold on second spot when they entertain rivals Central Coast in the F3 derby on Tuesday night.

It’s been a dream season for the Jets so far, and they further enhanced their premiership qualities last Wednesday night when they registered a 2-2 draw with defending premiers and dominant competition leaders Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium.

The Jets threatened to win their first game at Allianz since 2012 when they twice took the lead through Andrew Nabbout and Joey Champness, but Sydney struck back with an excellent solo goal to Milos Ninkovic and a late strike from Bobo.

Nevertheless, it was widely regarded as the best game of the season, and with Newcastle currently without multiple key first-team players, Ernie Merrick will fancy his chances of knocking off Sydney should they meet in finals football this season.

Newcastle will receive a boost on Tuesday, with Argentine import Patricio Rodriguez set to see some game time off the bench. Rodriquez was an ex-teammate of injured playmaker Ronny Vargas at AEK Athens and also played alongside Brazilian superstar Neymar at Santos during the early stages of his career.

Meanwhile, the Mariners have been struggling significantly after what was a bright start to the season, but they may have turned a corner on Saturday night.

Central Coast came into their clash with Melbourne Victory without scoring a goal in their last four games, but they finally broke their drought courtesy of Blake Powell, who cancelled out Besart Berisha’s earlier goal as the teams settled for a 1-1 draw.

While it was a solid result against the in-form Victory, the Mariners are still without a win since December 3 - and they will have their work cut out for them against the Jets.

Newcastle demolished Central Coast 5-1 in the opening game of the season in Gosford, and despite still missing a lot of star players, if they play anywhere near to the level they did against Sydney, they should prove too strong again at home.

Stats

  • Newcastle haven’t beaten Central Coast at home since 2012
  • Jets won their last meeting 5-1 on October 7
  • Jets are unbeaten against the Mariners in eight of their last nine matches
