Newcastle Jets and Brisbane Roar each look to kick-start their respective seasons when they square off in the final A-League match of Round 7 on Sunday at McDonald Jones Stadium.

A spot inside the top six is on the line as Round 7 draws to a close on Sunday, with Newcastle and Brisbane both determined to find some spark to get their seasons going in the right direction.

Newcastle and Brisbane have both won just the single game this season, but the Roar currently occupy a place in the top six after earning one more draw.

After going from wooden spooners to grand finalists in the space of one season, the Jets are experiencing a hangover of sorts as they aim to back up their brilliant displays from last campaign.

Newcastle’s lone win of the season came two weeks ago against the Wanderers, with Ernie Merrick’s team desperately missing striker Roy O’Donovan, who still has two games of a 10-match suspension to serve from his high kick to the head of Lawrence Thomas from the grand final.

A foot injury to Joey Champness has also contributed to the Jets looking lost in attack, with Jason Hoffman acting as a makeshift striker. A lack of killer instinct once again was on show as the Jets never made an impact in a lacklustre 3-0 loss to Melbourne City last week.

Meanwhile, Brisbane haven’t fared much better, with their only win of the campaign coming at home against City back in Round 5. Roar weren’t able to beat cellar-dwellers Central Coast and Wellington at home, which doesn’t bode well for any away fixtures or their ability to challenge for the premiership this season.

John Aloisi will be sweating on the fitness of star striker Adam Taggart, who limped off in the first half of their fiery 2-1 defeat to Adelaide last week with a groin injury. The former Socceroos has been named in the squad but is in doubt to take the field.

Brisbane haven’t travelled well to the Hunter in recent times, winning just one of their last four meetings at McDonald Jones Stadium. However, this could be a great chance for a rare three points, with Newcastle looking anything but settled at the moment. But, on the other hand, Brisbane aren’t looking too polished themselves. Back a tense game and a share of the spoils.
