Newcastle Jets look to continue their blistering form when they play host to Brisbane Roar to launch A-League Round 16 on Friday night at McDonald Jones Stadium.

After taking part in arguably the game of the A-League season to date against Sydney FC, the Jets backed up their 2-2 draw away from home with the competition leaders by toppling rivals Central Coast 2-0 in the F3 derby on Tuesday night.

It was a scrappy game from Newcastle for most of the opening half - and matters weren’t helped by cyclonic conditions in the second stanza - but after Joshua Rose was dismissed for a second bookable offence with 20 minutes remaining, Ernie Merrick’s side sensed an opportunity.

And they took it with both hands, with Dimi Petratos scoring with 10 minutes on the clock before new Argentine recruit Pato Rodriguez got his name on the scoresheet in a dream debut to complete the victory.

It leaves the Jets flying high in second spot on the ladder, five points clear of Melbourne City and eight adrift of runaway leaders Sydney.

However, with home games to come against Brisbane and Wellington - teams currently outside the top six - Newcastle have an excellent chance to cement their top two status.

Having scored in their last 15 A-League games (a record at the Jets), Newcastle will be confident of toppling the struggling Roar at home on Friday night.

Brisbane haven’t had a great had a great time of it since beating Adelaide 2-1 after Christmas, losing 2-0 to the Wanderers and copping a 3-0 hiding from Sydney on Monday.

Those results have left them languishing in ninth position on the table, four points behind the top six and in desperate need of some victories soon.

Unfortunately for Brisbane, they aren’t likely to pick up three points in the Hunter. Newcastle have won three of their last four encounters and are playing some fantastic football at the moment, while Rodriguez looks to have the potential to light up the A-League for the rest of the season. Expect another win for the Jets.

Stats

  • Newcastle have won three of the last four games between the sides
