Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory go head-to-head for the A-League premiership when they clash in the Grand Final at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night...but who will be crowned champions?

The A-League Grand Final kicks off at 7.50pm AEST. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

Prediction

Match Preview

The 2018 A-League Grand Final has one of two historic outcomes it can play host to with Newcastle Jets bidding to go from wooden spoonists to premiers in 12 months and Melbourne Victory attempt to win a record fourth premiership.

Which one of the fairytale stories will unfold when the two sides clash at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night?

It is perhaps not the Grand Final we expected after the Jets came from a goal down to beat Melbourne City 2-1 in last week's semi-final as that now infamous Riley McGree scorpion kick equaliser.

Victory, meanwhile, threw away victory then bounced back to win as Terry Antonis' late own goal handed Big Blue rivals Sydney FC a 2-2 draw and took the game to extra-time. But the reigning premiers then conceded as Antonis went from zero to hero against his former club.

The question now is whether Victory can back up from the exertions of that games and add to the joint equal record three premierships they have already won in 2007, 2009 and 2015.

Victory were beaten Grand Finalists 12 months ago as they lost to Sydney FC on penalties in the decider and Kevin Muscat will be desperate for his side to avoid back-to-back disappointments in the big dance.

The Jets haven't played in a Grand Final since winning their only championship in 2008 and it would cap a stunning turnaround under coach Ernie Merrick who took over after Newcastle finished bottom of the pile last season.

The two sides have never met in the finals but there has been very little to choose between them down the years in regular season A-League games with the Jets winning 16 times, Victory winning 14 times and nine draws.

All three games this season went the way of the home side with Victory losing 4-1 and 2-0 on two trips to Newcastle. The away side hasn't won in the last seven head-to-heads, dampening enthusiasm for Melbourne's chances.

But since opening the season without a win in the first six games, this Victory side has continued to defy the odds against them and I think they can do so again on Saturday night. They are experience in Grand Finals with this a record sixth appearance, and than can count for plenty and see them lift the trophy in an entertaining contest.

Stats

  • All three games this season were won by the home side with the Jets winning twice in Newcastle
  • Melbourne Victory are appearing in a record sixth Grand Final
  • Newcastle Jets are attempting to go from bottom to premiers in 12 months

Tips

This one could be a thriller with both sides having goals in them. Take a chance of their being over 4.5 goals at generous odds and Besart Berisha being amongst them.
