Newcastle Jets v Melbourne City A-League Semi-Final Match Preview and Predictions - City to make first Grand Final

Gary Emmerson 26 Apr 2018
  • Melbourne City won both games at Newcastle Jets in the regular season
  • The other game in Melbourne ended in a 2-2 draw
  • City have never made it to the Grand Final before

Newcastle Jets and Melbourne City clash in the first of the A-League semi-finals on Friday night and it might be the visitors who are creating history at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Jets v City kick off at 7.50pm AEST. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

Prediction

Match Preview

Newcastle Jets and Melbourne City stand 90 minutes away from the A-League Grand Final, but who will win through from the first of the semi-finals on Friday night?

The Jets had last week off courtesy of finishing second on the A-League ladder, while City made it through to the last four after a 2-0 home victory over Brisbane Roar is last week's Elimination Finals.

There is no doubting City are the form team of the pair and a first-ever appearance in the Grand Final awaits Warren Joyce's side if they can overcome the Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.

City have won four of their last five games - including against the Jets in Round 25 - with Bruno Fornaroli enjoying a fine return to the Melbourne side after missing most of the season through injury.

Having sewn up second spot early, the Jets suffered three defeats in a row - including that loss to City - but ended the regular A-League season with a thumping 8-2 win over rivals Central Coast Mariners.

Will they be able to repeat that effort against City and make it to the Grand Final for only the second time (they were crowned champions in 2008)?

Despite having to travel to the Hunter Valley, I like the chance of City and they can win through to a maiden Grand Final where premiers Sydney FC or Melbourne Victory would await.

City won on both trips to Newcastle in the regular season so take them to win in 90 minutes, but have a saver on them to qualify, which adds extra-time and penalties.
