Morocco v Iran World Cup Match Preview and Predictions - Morocco can edge out Iran in a tight tussle

Rippa Staff 12 Jun 2018
  • Morocco face Iran in the first Group B clash
  • A low-scoring match is predicted
  • Can Morocco challenge for a knockout stage spot?

Group B matches get underway as Morocco faces an all-important matchup against Iran at Saint-Petersburg Stadium on Friday (Saturday Morning AEST).

Morocco vs Iran kicks off at 01.00am AEST on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on SBS and Optus Sport in Australia.

Prediction

Match Preview

Group B is expected to be dominated by powerhouses Spain and Portugal. Both Morocco and Iran are coming into this Group as underdogs, however, either team has the opportunity to put the pressure on with an opening victory.

Despite it being 20 years since Morocco has competed in a World Cup, they are in blistering form. Over six matches, they were the only team to not concede a goal in the third round of CAF qualifying.

Morocco has continued that good form in International friendlies, with victories over Estonia (3-1), Slovakia (2-1), Uzbekistan (2-0) and Serbia (2-1). There only blemish was a 0-0 draw against Ukraine.

The Moroccans defence has been rock solid. They have a +8 goal differential over the last six matches and have allowed only three goals during this time.

Iran is making consecutive World Cup appearances for the first time in their counties history. Despite appearing in four World Cups, Iran has only scored twice on one occasion, against the United States back in 1998.

The bulk of Iran’s scoring will fall on striker Sardar Azmoun. Azmoun is known as ‘The Iranian Messi’.

Iran has a 3-2 record in International friendlies this year. They have had a 2-1 victory over Algeria and a 1-0 win over Uzbekistan, but have suffered a 1-0 loss against Tunisia and a 1-2 loss over Turkey.

Both defences look solid in this matchup and with so much at stake, I can’t see many goals being scored. With that being said, I think Morocco squeak away with the victory.

Stats

  • Despite making the World Cup for the second consecutive occasion, Iran has never made it past the group stage and has won only one match from 12 games
  • Morocco has won only two matches in their World Cup history and is competing for the first time since 1998.
