MLS All Stars v Arsenal Live: Gunners face the best of the MLS in San Jose

Ross Aylward 28 Jul 2016
  • Arsenal are this year's MLS All Stars opponents in California
  • Arsene Wenger's side face the best of the MLS
Arsenal's Theo Walcott

The MLS All Stars game will see the best players from the North America league take on Arsene Wenger's Arsenal on Thursday.

MLS All Stars v Arsenal kicks off at 09.30am AEST on Friday (00.30am UK) and will be streamed live online.

The Major League Soccer All Star games are always enjoyable affairs. The fixture brings together the best players of the MLS together as a team to compete against one of the biggest clubs in the world, with recent matches yielding victories over the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and one year ago in Colorado, a victory over Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs' North London rivals Arsenal are the next opponents for the All Stars, who include some serious talent in their ranks this year. The likes of New York City duo David Villa and Andrea Pirlo, plus stars like Kaka, Didier Drogba and Clint Dempsey will combine to make up the side - but can they continue their excellent winning streak?

This fixture will be Arsenal's second in their pre-season schedule. The Gunners have been on a training camp in France where they played out a 1-1 draw with Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens. Plenty of Arsene Wenger's stars are still on recovery following the European Championships and as such, haven't travelled to America for this game plus the fixture against Mexican side Guadalajara on Sunday.

The intentions for Wenger and his side this year are clear - challenge for the title once again. Having been beaten to the top spot by Leicester City last season, Arsenal are hoping that the signing of Granit Xhaka plus maybe one or two more new additions will help his team go one further this year.

There simply has to be goals in this game. Major League Soccer is known for high-scoring games and that's mainly due to most sides favouring spending their cash on attack-minded players, leaving defences with a lot to be desired. Drogba, Dempsey, Villa and co have the quality and experience to cause the Gunners defence plenty of problems in this game.

But Arsenal will be taking a strong side over to San Jose's Avaya Stadium, even without some of their bigger players. The likes of Theo Walcott, Alex Iwobi and Santi Cazorla will prove too strong for a relatively weak MLS All Star defence and they'll be among the goals themselves too. The last six MLS All Star games have seen three or more goals scored.

David Villa has been a real threat ever since joining New York City. The former World Cup winning Spaniard is deadly in front of goal and has racked up 21 goals in 52 MLS appearances during his time in the Big Apple so far. The 34-year-old found the net in last year's MLS All Star win over Tottenham and could do so again against Arsenal.
