Mexico v Sweden World Cup Preview and Predictions - Mexico seek top spot, Sweden a place in knockouts

Gary Emmerson 27 Jun 2018

It is all to play for when Mexico and Sweden go head-to-head in Group G at Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg on Wednesday (Thursday AEST).

Mexico v Sweden kicks off at 12.00am AEST on Thursday. The game will be broadcast on SBS in Australia.

Prediction

Match Preview

Mexico and Sweden collide in a crucial game in Group D with both looking for results to seal their place in the Round of 16 of the World Cup.

In a group in which the fair play record may be needed to decide which two teams progress to the knockout stages, Mexico and Sweden know what they need to do at Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg to seal their spots in the last 16.

Having won their opening two games with 1-0 and 2-1 wins over Germany and South Korea respectively, Mexico sit top of the standings and know a draw will be enough to guarantee finishing a group winners.

Sweden suffered heartache as they conceded four minutes into injury time to go down 2-1 to Germany. A 1-0 win over South Korea in their opening game means that the Swedes and Germany and locked level on points, goal difference, goals scores and goals conceded. As a result, Sweden will qualify if they better Germany's performance against South Korea or if they win by more than one goal against Mexico.

A 2-1 win for both Sweden and Germany in the final round of games, meanwhile, would leave them on the same points, same goal difference, same goals scored and same goals conceded as Mexico meaning the three sides would have to be separated by disciplinary records.

It promises to be a tense night for both sides as they look for the respective results that will take them through, but I've been impressed by Mexico at the finals and they can preserve their perfect record with another win.

Stats

  • A draw will see Mexico qualify as group winners
  • Sweden need to better the result of Germany to be guaranteed of qualification
  • One scenario would see Mexico, Sweden and Germany having to be seperated by fair play records
