Victory host Glory on Saturday night

Melbourne Victory target a third successive win over Perth Glory when the two sides square off at AAMI Park on Saturday night in A-League Round 16 action.

Both Victory and Glory are attempting to bounce back from disappointing last-start defeats mid-week as they aim for a return to the winners circle on Saturday night.

Perth’s situation is far more dire at the moment - they’ve lost their last three matches against Sydney FC, Adelaide United and Melbourne City, conceding a combined 11 goals and scoring none themselves.

It doesn’t get much worse than that over a three-game period for Kenny Lowe’s side, with Perth really struggling at the moment with their inexperienced defence, while their normally potent attack also isn’t firing.

Glory have slipped out of the top six as a result, and with all the teams above them looking in solid form, they face a steep uphill battle to regain a finals spot.

In saying that, Victory experienced an unexpected roadblock across the ditch on Wednesday night as they were upstaged by Wellington Phoenix.

Victory were behind the eight-ball from the get-go as Rhys Williams was sent off after just eighth minutes, but that didn’t stop Kevin Muscat’s side from taking the lead just before half-time thanks to a brilliant solo effort from Kosta Barbarouses.

However a Roy Krishna strike and a late own goal from Mark Milligan handed Phoenix all three points and delivered a blow to Victory’s climb up the ladder.

Victory were making a solid push towards second spot after beating the Jets at home, but they’ve now won just one point from a possible six against the struggling Mariners and Phoenix, meaning they’ve slipped to fifth and well off the pace once more.

Nevertheless, they have a great record against Perth and at home, Victory should bag all three points. Glory’s defence is in shambles at the moment and Victory’s attack will likely find the back of the net on multiple occasions.

Stats

  • Perth haven’t won against Victory at AAMI Park since 2013
  • Victory have won their last two meetings
  • Victory won 2-0 earlier this season at nib Stadium
