Melbourne Victory vs Newcastle Jets A-League Preview and Team News - Victory target third straight win over Jets in Grand Final rematch

Victory host Jets on Saturday night

Melbourne Victory look to immediately return to the winners circle when they play host to the Newcastle Jets in A-League Round 13 action on Saturday night.

After falling to a surprise 2-0 defeat to Adelaide mid-week, can Victory register an immediate response and defeat a desperate Jets outfit on Saturday night at AAMI Park?

Victory have now won just one of their last four games following their loss to Adelaide, including a pair of 1-1 draws with City and Phoenix and a scrappy 2-1 triumph over the Wanderers last week.

With Perth easing past Sydney later on Wednesday night, Victory and the Sky Blues are both six points behind the men in purple at the top of the ladder.

There’s no coincidence that Victory’s dip in form has coincided with Keisuke Honda’s injury, with the Japanese star set to be sidelined for a few more weeks.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have been made to rue missed chances to claim a combined six points against Adelaide and Brisbane in recent weeks, losing to City 2-1 in their last clash and coming into this game seven points outside of the top six.

The Jets fired over 20 shots against Adelaide and Brisbane but didn’t win either game, drawing 2-2 with Brisbane and conceding a late penalty to lose to the Reds. It leaves Ernie Merrick’s team with a lot of work to do over the next month to close the gap, and with games coming up against Sydney and Perth this month, it’s a big ask.

Of course, this match doubles as a rematch of last season’s Grand Final, which Victory won 1-0 in controversial circumstances. Victory repeated that score at McDonald Jones Stadium in November and will be favourites to win again on Saturday night. Newcastle just aren’t putting away their chances, while Victory will be determined to bounce back after losing to Adelaide. Expect three points from the home team in this one.

Stats

  • Victory have won their last two meetings 1-0, including last season’s Grand Final
  • Newcastle’s last win over Victory at AAMI Park came in 2015
  • Jets lost 2-1 at AAMI Park last week to City
