Victory face City on Saturday night

Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City collide in the third derby of the season when the two sides square off on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium in A-League Round 20 action.

Victory go in search of their first win of the season over City after losing their first clash and drawing the second courtesy of a last-minute header from Dario Vidosic.

Neck and neck with competition leaders Perth Glory for most of the season, Victory have slipped behind in the race for the minor premiership in recent weeks - mostly due to their 2-1 loss against Glory a couple of weeks ago, with Kevin Muscat’s side now nine points off the pace.

That gap drifted even further last week when Perth thumped Brisbane 4-0 and Victory were held to a 1-1 draw across the ditch against Wellington.

Muscat will be sweating on the fitness of injured striker Ola Toivonen, while Keisuke Honda is also in line for a start as he begins to regain his mojo.

Meanwhile, City are in extremely poor form coming into this showdown, losing three of their last four matches, including a 3-1 defeat to a second-string Newcastle Jets side last week.

City are now just six points clear of the seventh-placed Jets, and if they lose and Newcastle beat Adelaide on Sunday, that margin will narrow to three.

City’s attack has been an issue all season, especially due to Bruno Fornaroli’s falling out with Warren Joyce, so fans will be hoping Jamie Maclaren re-discovers his goalscoring boots sooner rather than later.

Victory have won four of the last seven meetings between these teams, but they haven’t won in the last two meetings. City took home the chocolates at the start of the season, but are nowhere near that level at the moment. Victory aren’t at their best either, but I think they are a class above City right now.

Stats

  • Victory have won four of their last seven meetings
  • However, they haven’t won any of the last two
  • City have gone behind 1-0 at half-time in their last four A-League games
