Victory face Adelaide on Friday night

Melbourne Victory play host to Adelaide United in a crucial clash for both sides as they launch Round 10 of the 2017/18 A-League season on Friday night at Etihad Stadium.

Fifth-placed Adelaide United square off against sixth-placed Melbourne Victory on Friday night, with both sides looking to climb up the ladder as the chaotic holiday season approaches.

Adelaide have been hit hard by injuries in recent weeks, with flying Danish winger Johan Absalonson still a couple of weeks away from returning, but coach Marco Kurz will welcome back a couple of key additions on Friday night, including fullbacks Michael Marrone and Ben Garuccio, while Vince Lia - who scored both goals in Adelaide’s 2-2 draw with Victory in October - is also back to full fitness and available for selection.

After a challenging campaign in 2016/17 as they attempted to defend their A-League title, Adelaide are once again looking like a formidable force this season - and when they have Absalonsen back operating at the peak of his powers, they will be extremely hard to stop.

Coming into this showdown on the back of another tight loss to reigning A-League and FFA Cup champions Sydney FC, can Adelaide claim a rare win in Melbourne?

Victory started the season very slowly, but after gradually welcoming back their best players over the last few weeks, they’ve began to generate a bit of momentum - most recently registering a come-from-behind 3-2 triumph across the ditch over Wellington Phoenix.

Victory went behind 2-0 before launching their comeback, with Socceroos star James Troisi bagging the winner after an earlier strike from Besart Berisha and a Goran Paracki own goal.

"I thought we started very well. The fact we were 2-0 down, we had a minimal lapse in concentration and we conceded two fantastic goals," Victory captain Carl Valeri told Fox Sports.
"We knew we had it in us to come back and we showed that in the end. I think we created a lot more chances and it's very positive going into a tough game next week."

It’s always a fiery encounter when these two sides do battle, and Friday night promises to be no different. Both are in solid form at the moment, with Adelaide enjoying the better start but Victory arguably playing the better recent football, along with carrying the momentum. Victory have a great record against the Reds at Adelaide and I’ll back Kevin Muscat’s side to continue their upward trajectory and come away with all three points.

Stats

  • Victory and Adelaide played out a 2-2 draw in their last clash back in October
  • Adelaide won 3-0 in the FFA Cup earlier this season
  • Victory had won their last three meetings before that
