Match Preview

A heavy defeat at Ulsan Hyunda on Wednesday spelled an end to Melbourne Victory's hopes of making the AFC Champions League knockout stages and attention quickly turns back to A-League duties and the quest to finish in third spot.

Victory are locked in a battle with cross town rivals Melbourne City for third, a position which would mean avoiding Premiers Plate Sydney FC until the Grand Final should they make it to the big dance. Victory face the Sky Blues in the final game of the regular season next week, so three points here is essential.

Kevin Muscat's side must put the exit from the Asian continental competition behind them and get back to winning ways on Sunday, something they are likely to need to do with City two points ahead and potentially five clear by the time this game kicks off.

Victory are red-hot favourites to secure all three points against a Wellington Phoenix side which is destined to end up with the wooden spoon.

Wellington have lost five in a row on the road, having won only one away game all season and have packed their bag and waved goodbye to a dismal season a long time ago.

Phoenix have proved to be a banana skin for Victory in the past, winning three of the last four meetings including a 2-1 win at home in January, but this one should result in an emphatic win for Melbourne.
