Melbourne Victory v Shanghai SIPG AFC Champions League Match Preview and Predictions - Can Victory sign off with a win?

Gary Emmerson 17 Apr 2018
  • Shanghai SIPG won 4-1 when the sides met on Matchday One
  • The Chinese Super League side are guaranteed top spot, Melbourne Victory are eliminated
  • Shanghai SIPG have won all six games at the start of the domestic season

Melbourne Victory sign off their AFC Champions League campaign with a home game against Shanghai SIPG when the sides meet at AAMI Park on Wednesday night.

Melbourne Victory v Shanghai SIPG kicks off at 8.00pm AEST.

Prediction

Match Preview

Having already been eliminated, Melbourne Victory will conclude their AFC Champions League Group F by trying to inflict a first defeat of the campaign on Shanghai SIPG.

It was differing fortunes for these two sides in Matchday Five two weeks ago as Victory's hopes of qualifying were ended by a 6-2 defeat at Ulsan Hyundai while Shanghai moved into the Round of 16 courtesy of a 1-1 draw at home to Kawasaki Frontale.

Kevin Muscat's Victory side now have nothing but pride to play for ahead of the final game, and Melbourne will have their eyes focused on Sunday's A-League Elimination Final against Adelaide United rather than this game.

That makes Shanghai SIPG firm favourites to finish the Group F campaign unbeaten as they look to add to a record of three wins and two draws already collected.

It was a dominant 4-1 win for Shanghai in the reverse game on Matchday One and although neither side have anything to play for with the visitors guaranteed to finish top of the group.

Shangai SIPG have started the Chinese Super League season with six wins from six to top the standings and I fully expect them to secure another win in Melbourne.

Match Odds

Melbourne Victory - $2.90
Shanghai SIPG - $2.15
Draw - $3.50
