Prediction

Match Preview

Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United renew their rivalry in an A-League Elimination Final on Sunday with a date to face premiers Sydney FC in the semi-finals next week at stake for the winner.

Fourth placed Victory and fifth placed Adelaide will have to do things the hard way if they are to win the Grand Final, but first they must get past one another for the right to face the Sky Blues.

These two sides head into the finals in good form with Victory having won five of their last seven in the A-League including the last four at AAMI Park, and the Reds winning four of their last five fixtures.

The two meetings between the sides in Melbourne this season ended with a win each, Victory winning 3-0 most recently having previously lost 2-1 at home. The meeting in Adelaide at the start of the season ended in a 2-2 draw.

It promises to be a closely fought final although the bookmakers are banking on home advantage and the recent home form of Kevin Muscat's Victory seeing them through into the semis.

Given Victory's recent record in the head-to-heads against Adelaide, with four wins in the last six meetings, I'm happy to be backing the home side to set up another Big Blue showdown.

Stats

  • Melbourne Victory have won four of the last six meetings
  • Victory have won five of their last seven games, including four in a row at home
  • Adelaide United have won four of their last five games
