City host Phoenix on Saturday night

Melbourne City target their sixth successive win over the embattled Wellington Phoenix when the two sides square off in A-League Round 14 action on Saturday night at AAMI Park.

Looking to keep pace with cross-town rivals Melbourne Victory and the second-placed Newcastle Jets, City will be confident of claiming all three points when Wellington roll into town on Saturday night.

City have won their last five games against the struggling Kiwi club and have kept three clean sheets in the process. Furthermore, Wellington have only won once in 11 attempts over City at AAMI Park, while they’ve failed to score in their last five away games - their equal worst stretch in that regard.

City are in desperate need of a victory - they’ve lost their last three games against Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers - and they’ve fallen to fourth on the ladder as a result.

Ross McCormack missed a crucial penalty against the Wanderers on New Year’s Day, with City blowing an initial lead by conceding two goals in a minute to fall at ANZ Stadium.

Phoenix meanwhile are still anchored to the bottom of the ladder with just one win from 12 games and a whopping six points off their nearest rival.

You never like to say it so early in the campaign, but it’s highly likely that Wellington’s season is over unless they can drastically reverse their fortunes over the next couple of months.

But that doesn’t look happening at all at the moment, with Phoenix staring down the barrel of a seventh straight game without a win. City aren’t playing well, but at home and against a team they have dominated recently, they should return to the winners circle.

Stats

  • City have won the last five meetings between the sides
  • Wellington have only won once over City at AAMI Park in 11 attempts
  • Phoenix haven’t scored in their last five away games
