Preview and Tips

A blockbuster top three encounter awaits on Saturday night as reigning premiers Sydney FC take on an in-form Melbourne City outfit in second and final game of the A-League’s split round this weekend.

For Sydney, it’s currently smooth sailing like it’s been for the better part of the last 24 months. They’ve added the FFA Cup trophy to their cabinet this season and are nine points clear of second-placed Newcastle and 13 away from third-placed City with just one defeat for the campaign.

Graham Arnold’s side are firing in goals for fun, led by Brazilian superstar Bobo, and are a brick wall at the back, conceding just 14 goals in 19 games for the season. Barely anyone is getting injured or suspended and Arnold has the luxury of picking the same team almost every week.

In short, Sydney FC are the definition of comfortable as far as domestic football leagues go heading into the 20th game of the season.

City have endured another bumpy ride, but they are playing their most consistent football of the season, and they do have a genuine chance of inflicting just the second defeat on Sydney this season.

Ross McCormack has returned to Aston Villa, but City welcome back original gun striker Bruno Fornaroli from injury, with the Uruguayan in contention for a starting spot.

Polish import Marcin Budzinski is in tremendous form after scoring four goals in his last four games, while teenage sensation Daniel Arzani continues to impress - so much so that people are calling for him to be fast-tracked into the Socceroos setup as soon as possible.

Add in Dario Vidosic and Luke Brattan, and City have a lot of ways they can hurt Sydney in the final third. Furthermore, if City can claim all three points, they will come to within just one point of the Jets, putting pressure on the Hunter side who play their split round game next week against the Wanderers.

Sydney have won their last five matches against City, but this game could prove a challenging one to extend that run. City are confident and in-form and have won two of the last three meetings between the sides at AAMI Park. I can’t tip them to beat Sydney, but I don’t think they’ll lose this, so back the draw on Saturday night.

Stats

  • Sydney have won the last five games between the sides
  • City have won two of the last three at AAMI Park
  • City have only scored one goal in their last four games against Sydney
