City host Jets on Sunday

Melbourne City search for back-to-back wins on Sunday when they square off against the Newcastle Jets in A-League Round 11 action.

With four wins from their last six meetings, City will be confident of backing up their New Year’s Day triumph over the Wanderers and solidifying their spot in the top four on the ladder.

Unbeaten in their last three games, beating Adelaide and the Wanderers and earning a hard-fought point with rivals Victory in the derby, City have stabilised after another inconsistent start to the season and all the controversy surrounding the omission of Bruno Fornaroli.

City have already defeated the Jets 3-0 this season at home, and with Newcastle struggling to find the back of the net and convert their chances, they will fancy their chances of doing so again.

Newcastle have fired at least 20 shots in three of their last four games, but ironically the only game in which they didn’t achieve that feat, they won, beating the Mariners 2-1 just before Christmas.

The Jets dominated Adelaide and Brisbane in their last two outings, but they paid the price for not being more clinical in front of goal, conceding a late penalty to lose to Adelaide, while Brisbane equalised in the last 10 minutes to earn a draw on Wednesday night.

Remaining outside of the top six due to their inability to kill off games, Newcastle need to start winning games and scoring goals if they want to play finals football for the second straight year.

However, if they can’t beat Adelaide and Brisbane at home, I don’t fancy their chances to defeat City away. Warren Joyce’s side are starting to click and have been one of the better teams in the competition over the festive period. I expect City to continue their winning ways on Sunday.

Stats

  • City lost just one of their last six meetings vs Jets
  • Newcastle winless at AAMI Park vs City since the 2015/16 season
  • City lost just one of their last seven home games
